The problem
Why it needed to exist
Families supporting children who find speech hard often rely on expensive or clinical tools. They needed something simple, private and friendly enough for daily life at home.
What we built
The product
- A picture-tile communication board that builds sentences, spoken with text-to-speech or a parent's recorded voice
- Visual daily routines that remember progress through the day
- A calm-down space with a gentle timer and box-breathing exercise
- Parent mode with custom tiles from the camera, routines, a mood and sleep tracker, accessibility settings and Face ID unlock
- Kid mode with no purchases and no ads on the child's content
AI and technology
Talkable keeps the child's photos, voice clips, schedules and check-ins on the device, with no account required. In a children's app, the smartest technical decision was keeping data local and the interface calm.
Business model
A free demo with sample tiles, then a subscription in parent mode that unlocks unlimited boards, full routines and the daily tracker, billed through the App Store.
Lessons
What Talkable taught us
These are the lessons we now bring to every venture partnership.
Design for two users at once
The child needs big, calm screens. The parent needs control and peace of mind. Splitting kid mode from parent mode served both.
Privacy is the product in a kids' app
Store review and parents both hold a children's app to a higher bar. Keeping data on the device made trust the default.
Ship, then listen
Version 1.0.5 added more tiles and routine progress that survives leaving the app, both straight from how families actually used it.
