The problem
Why it needed to exist
Most safety apps assume a working internet connection, which is the first thing to disappear in a crisis. People needed guidance that lives on the phone itself, without an account and without a signal.
What we built
The product
- An on-device AI assistant that answers survival and first-aid questions with no internet connection
- 17 crisis scenarios and lifestyle modes, from grid-down and natural disasters to backcountry, sailing and overland travel
- Downloadable offline maps with shelter, water, medical and evacuation layers
- Family coordination with Bluetooth mesh chat that works device to device, with no cell towers
- An illustrated offline library, plant identification and supply tracking with expiry alerts
- HAVEN Watch, an optional live monitoring subscription with disaster feeds and push alerts
AI and technology
HAVEN ships 22 curated on-device models that users can choose by speed, language or reasoning ability. Running AI locally removed per-query cloud costs, kept user data on the device and made the core promise, help without a signal, actually true.
Business model
A free tier with no account, a one-time Pro unlock, and a low-cost weekly subscription for the live Watch features. Pro unlocks at no charge in regions facing declared emergencies or armed conflict.
Lessons
What HAVEN taught us
These are the lessons we now bring to every venture partnership.
Pick the architecture from the promise
"Works offline" can't be a feature you add later. It decided the AI approach, the data model and the map pipeline from day one.
On-device AI changes the economics
Local models cost nothing per question, which made a generous free tier possible. Cloud AI would have forced a paywall in front of the most important moment.
Mix one-time and recurring revenue
A one-time Pro unlock suits people who distrust subscriptions. A separate live service earns recurring revenue only where there is recurring cost.
